Digital Identity in Europe: Germany's Lissi Raises €3.5 Million

Germany's Lissi has raised €3.5 million in a round led by Ventech, with BM H Hessen and existing investors also participating. The funding will help banks prepare for the EU's AMLR anti-money laundering rules, effective 10 July 2027.

From 10 July 2027, European financial institutions must comply with the EU's revised anti-money laundering regulation, known as AMLR (Anti-Money Laundering Regulation), which imposes stricter customer verification requirements. The rules are linked to eIDAS 2.0 and the coming European digital identity wallet ecosystem (EUDI Wallet), under which banks are expected to be able to verify customers digitally through a shared European standard rather than country-specific solutions. For banks, this means significant technical adaptation work ahead of the deadline, making providers of such infrastructure attractive investment targets.

Funding round led by Ventech

Lissi says the €3.5 million round is led by the pan-European venture fund Ventech, with BM H Beteiligungs-Managementgesellschaft Hessen joining as a new investor. Existing owners — including the Commerzbank group, from which Lissi was originally spun off in 2023, and Ninepointfive Ventures — are also participating.

According to Lissi, the mix of investors from Germany, France and Belgium reflects its ambition to build a pan-European company.

AMLR deadline pushes banks to act

The company says the timing of the funding round is closely tied to the AMLR rules taking effect on 10 July 2027, which Lissi says will increase demand for reliable digital identity solutions in the financial sector. Already today, 90 percent of Lissi's customers come from the financial sector, including banks, insurers, payment providers and identity verification providers.

The capital will go toward helping financial institutions meet AMLR requirements, as well as developing new open finance business models based on identity wallets.

New SDK to turn banking apps into identity wallets

Lissi is also expanding its Wallet Connector Suite with a new SDK — a developer tool that lets financial institutions build identity wallet functionality directly into their existing mobile apps.

"We won the German government's EUDI Wallet Challenge in 2025. Building on that experience, we're now expanding our EUDI Wallet Connector Suite and have begun developing our own SDK. This lets financial companies integrate all the functions of modern identity wallets directly into their own apps," says Sebastian Bickerle, CTO and co-founder of Lissi.

From Commerzbank to independent pan-European company

Lissi was spun off from the Commerzbank group in 2023 and has since built itself up as an independent provider of identity wallet integration. The company has led the IDunion research project and taken part in the European large-scale pilots EWC and POTENTIAL, as well as the ongoing WE BUILD consortium.

"Financial institutions need solutions that can be integrated seamlessly into existing IT landscapes, while retaining full control over their customer data. Our platform is built precisely for these requirements," says Helge Michael, CEO and co-founder of Lissi.
