NBX picks Tieto Banktech as banking partner

NBX has chosen Tieto Banktech as its core banking software partner, expanding a partnership that already covers card issuing. The platform will provide accounts, payments and ledger infrastructure — a step toward a regulated digital asset bank.

"Choosing Tieto Banktech as our core banking software partner is a foundational step. A Digital Asset Bank needs the same industrial-strength infrastructure as any traditional bank — accounts, payments and ledgers that regulators, partners and customers can rely on — combined with the digital asset capabilities NBX has built over the past years. With Tieto Banktech we get a proven Nordic banking platform that lets us move from crypto exchange to full-spectrum digital asset financial services."

Toward a full banking licence

Norwegian Block Exchange (NBX), listed on Euronext Growth Oslo, has spent several years moving from a pure crypto exchange toward a broader range of financial services. The company already holds an e-money institution licence from Norway's Financial Supervisory Authority (Finanstilsynet) and is authorised as a crypto-asset service provider (CASP) under MiCA, with services passported across the rest of the EU/EEA. The choice of core banking supplier is another step in a strategy where NBX is ultimately aiming for a full banking licence.

Expanding an existing partnership

Tieto Banktech, formerly Tietoevry Banking, already delivers the card issuing and processing infrastructure for NBX's upcoming multicurrency Visa card. The agreement now expands to also cover the core banking platform, which will handle accounts, ledger and payments processing. That brings NBX's card, stablecoin and banking operations onto a single technology backbone, delivered as a managed service built to meet the requirements that apply to licensed banks, including the EU's Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA).

Combining banking technology with crypto expertise

NBX points to the combination of traditional banking infrastructure and the company's existing digital asset expertise as what will make the move from crypto exchange to full-spectrum financial services possible.

Visa card and further banking plans

The core banking platform will, among other things, support the multicurrency Visa card programme NBX plans to launch in the fourth quarter of 2026. It's also intended as a foundation for the next phase of the strategy: establishing a licensed bank as part of what NBX calls its Digital Asset Bank push.
