Ken Villum Klausen, who founded the digital challenger bank Lunar in 2015, announced on LinkedIn today that he is stepping down as CEO.

Klausen describes the decision as a natural step now that the company has matured and established itself as the largest challenger bank in the Nordics, serving over one million retail customers.

"Lunar has the strongest team in its history. The strategy for the next phase is razor-sharp, and we are all completely aligned. The product is loved, the business is healthy, and the ambitions for what lies ahead are even greater than what has been. The best time for an entrepreneur to pass on the baton is when things are working—not when they are struggling. That is exactly what I am doing now, with a full heart," Klausen wrote in his LinkedIn post.

Experienced Banking Executive Takes Over

Søren Kyhl will be the new man at the helm, taking over the CEO position starting in early June. Kyhl brings extensive experience from both traditional and digital banking. His background includes serving as Chief Operating Officer (COO) and member of the Executive Board at Saxo Bank, where he spent ten years, in addition to over 13 years of experience at Danske Bank.

Lunar’s Chairman of the Board, Jens Peter Leschly Neergaard, stated in a press release that Kyhl is the right person to lead the bank into its next phase, which will focus on commercial development, operations, and regulatory maturity.

Fresh Capital and Nordic Growth

The departure comes on the heels of a strong financial boost for the bank. As recently as January, Lunar raised 350 million Danish kroner (equivalent to over half a billion Norwegian kroner) in a new funding round.

The capital was secured from both existing and new investors to accelerate growth in the Nordics—specifically targeting the expansion of its business banking services, developing new lending products, and expanding its footprint in Norway and Finland.

In connection with the funding round in January, Klausen stated that the bank is experiencing strong momentum and aims to achieve profitability during the course of the year. It is this solid foundation that he is now handing over to his successor.

Heavy Focus on Crypto – Historic MiCA License

As a true challenger bank, Lunar has distinguished itself by taking on traditional banks in new arenas. Through its own integrated trading platform, Lunar Block, the bank has made a significant push into digital assets.

In October last year, the bank marked a historic milestone by becoming the very first bank and crypto platform in Scandinavia to be approved for a license as a Crypto-Asset Service Provider (CASP) under the EU's new, strict MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets) regulation.

This robust regulatory framework ensures a far safer and more transparent trading experience for users. The service was initially rolled out in Denmark and Sweden, with Norway becoming the final market to receive the feature when the challenger bank launched crypto trading there in January. With the Norwegian launch, Lunar completed its crypto offering across all three Scandinavian countries, allowing customers in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark to trade cryptocurrency safely and seamlessly directly within the banking app.

From Startup to Nordic Giant

Since its inception in 2015, Lunar has evolved from a Danish fintech startup into a fully-fledged bank with a banking license and operations across the Nordic region. Under Klausen's leadership, the company has raised substantial capital and launched a wide range of innovative solutions for both private individuals and businesses.

This leadership transition marks the end of an era for Lunar, but Klausen emphasizes that the bank stands on incredibly solid ground as he chooses to step aside after eleven years of intense building.
