K33 to use MiCA licence to expand across Europe

K33 Markets AS has received MiCA authorisation from Norway's Financial Supervisory Authority, and plans to use the licence to grow across the EEA – through clients, partnerships and acquisitions among firms seeking a regulated European platform.

K33 is led by Torbjørn Bull Jenssen, who on Tuesday evening was invited to present K33 at a Pitch40 event in Oslo.

The approval comes as more Nordic and Baltic players secure MiCA licences, with the framework now effectively a prerequisite for running a regulated crypto business in the EU. For K33, which has spent years building institutional-grade infrastructure, the licence means the company can, for the first time, offer its services across the entire EEA under a single authorisation – and according to management, the plan is to use exactly that as a platform for growth beyond its own client base.

"MiCA marks the beginning of a new phase for the European crypto industry. Beyond serving our own clients, we see significant opportunities to work with exchanges, brokers, OTC desks and other market participants that can benefit from a regulated European platform. We look forward to engaging with companies seeking a trusted partner for long-term growth in Europe," says Torbjørn Bull Jenssen, CEO of K33.

What the licence covers

The authorisation from Finanstilsynet covers three services under Article 63 of MiCA: custody and administration of crypto-assets on behalf of clients, execution of orders for crypto-assets, and provision of transfer services for crypto-assets. With these in place, K33 Markets AS can offer the services across the EEA through passporting, meaning it does not need separate approvals in each country where it wants to operate.

From infrastructure to scale

K33 has spent recent years building what it describes as institutional-grade infrastructure designed for a regulated market. With the MiCA licence in place, the company says it is now positioned to scale its offering to private investors, corporates, wealth managers and institutional clients across the EEA.

"Receiving MiCA authorisation is a major milestone for K33. We have spent years building our platform, infrastructure and compliance framework with a regulated European market in mind. With MiCA in place, we can now fully utilise that platform and serve clients across Europe under a common regulatory framework. This marks the beginning of a new chapter for K33," says Jenssen.

Eyeing partnerships and acquisitions

K33 says the licence also strengthens its ability to pursue strategic growth initiatives across Europe. The company says it is well positioned to support crypto businesses seeking a regulated European operating framework, and intends to explore partnerships, infrastructure collaborations and acquisitions that build on the new authorisation.

Scope could broaden over time

K33 says it intends to use the MiCA framework to offer regulated crypto-asset services across the EEA through passporting. As the platform and product offering continue to develop, K33 plans to broaden the scope of its MiCA authorisation, enabling additional services and capabilities under the European regulatory framework. If the ambitions pay off, today's authorisation could become more than an entry ticket to the EEA – it could form the foundation for a broader, pan-European K33.
