Danish Januar has received a CASP licence under MiCA from Finanstilsynet and raised €1 million led by Borderless Capital. It can now offer fiat payments and stablecoin services under a single regulatory framework across the EEA.

Januar is a Copenhagen-based infrastructure company that has provided payment services to crypto and fintech businesses under a PSD2 licence since 2021. MiCA — the EU's regulatory framework for crypto-assets — requires companies offering trading, custody or stablecoin services to obtain authorisation as a CASP (Crypto-Asset Service Provider). With both licences in place, Januar can now serve customers across the entire EEA through a single, unified regulatory framework.
"This CASP licence allows us to double down on stablecoin-powered payments while offering business-critical services to companies that work with crypto assets on a daily basis. Januar was founded to offer all fundamental infrastructure through a single platform, and the combination of a CASP licence and new investment allows us to continue expanding that vision."
— Simon Ousager, Founder and CSO, Januar
Until now, Januar operated as a licensed Payment Institution under PSD2, providing fiat accounts, IBANs and SEPA payments. The CASP authorisation from Finanstilsynet now allows the company to offer crypto-asset services — trading, custody and stablecoin infrastructure — under the same pan-European framework.
The combination means Januar can unite traditional payment infrastructure and stablecoin settlement on a single licensed platform. The company describes the model as a bridge between the SEPA system and continuous, stablecoin-based payment infrastructure for crypto businesses across the EEA.
€1 million from Borderless and Likeminded
The €1 million round is led by Borderless Capital, a web3-focused investment firm founded in 2018, and Likeminded, an early-stage venture firm. Existing investor CMT Digital also participates.
"Stablecoins are becoming regulated under the same rigorous supervisory framework as traditional payments. With its early track record, established licensing and deep expertise, Januar offers a level of execution, compliance and trust that is rare in the market today."
— Alpen Sheth, Partner, Borderless Capital
"We are very pleased to back Januar. We firmly believe in the team, and the larger underlying trend of bridging the crypto industry with the more traditional banking sector. Januar is uniquely positioned to do just that."
— Mikael Bondum, GP, Likeminded
MiCA is the EU's first comprehensive framework for stablecoins, crypto trading and custody, which entered full force for CASP services at the end of 2024. Companies wishing to offer these services in the EU/EEA must now obtain national authorisation — which then grants access to the entire European market through passporting rules.
Januar views the regulatory shift as a strategic opportunity: compliance is no longer a barrier but a requirement that separates operators who can function across the EEA from those who cannot. With both licences secured, the company is positioned to serve crypto businesses that need regulated infrastructure for payments and digital assets under one roof.
