Founder Frank Schuil returns as CEO of Safello with a strong AI focus

Safello founder Frank Schuil is back as chief executive officer of the Swedish crypto company. He takes over from Emelie Moritz who, according to the company and in consultation with the Board, has decided to leave Safello

Safello Group AB announced on Monday that its Board of Directors has appointed co-founder Frank Schuil (pictured left) as its new CEO with immediate effect. At the same time, Emelie Moritz (right) is resigning as Chief Executive Officer following a decision which, according to the company, has been taken in consultation with the Board of Directors. She will continue as an advisor during a transition period.

The change involves Schuil stepping from the role of chairman and back into the operational chief chair, with a distinct AI focus.

Leadership changes in 2023 and 2026

The leadership shift differs from the solution Safello landed on in 2023, when Frank Schuil stepped to the chairman role and Emelie Moritz took over as CEO. The transition was then referred to as a natural shift in which the entrepreneur took a step up the board, while Moritz — with operational experience, legal background and commercial profile — would lead the company in the next phase. Schuil then expressed a desire to change his own involvement from operational issues to focus more on strategy.

Now it's going the opposite way. Over the course of three years, Safello has first elevated Moritz to CEO and Schuil to chairman of the board, before bringing the entrepreneur back to the operational leadership role while Moritz leaves the company.

Delivered on key objectives

In the recent communication, the Board of Directors highlights that Moritz has delivered on key objectives, including securing a MICA license in Safello AB and building a regulated and scalable platform as a basis for further commercialization in the EU. In articles in Kaupr we have also covered news and aspirations of Safello and Moritz to go from being a crypto exchange to become a crypto bank, and now a few weeks ago about shifting focus from private clients to institutional clients. Moritz has also been a key contributor in discussions about Swedish regulation of crypto as well as in the development of communities such as the Nordic Blockchain Association and Blockchain Sweden.

Schuil driving force behind AI venture

As Safello's strategy changes have occurred during a period in which Schuil has been chairman of the board, it may not lend itself to a major strategy shift. But with a lot of excitement surrounding what Safello's AI venture could mean. In a press release, Frank Schuil said he was “excited to step back into the CEO role in this time of rapid change driven by artificial intelligence.” Schuil has for a long time been the driving force in a decentralized AI venture on Safello's part around the Bitsensor platform and the platform's token TAO. In the crypto market in general, there is now also a strong integration between the blockchain, stablecoins and agentic AI.

For investors and customers, today’s news means, among other things, that Safello is once again led by its original founder, while the company enters a new phase with a completed MiCA license, a broader European push – and a strengthened AI strategy.
