Fear index plunged in a day after Binance hack

Crypto's fear index fell from 51 to 30 in a single day, shifting from “neutral” to “fear,” as the suspected Binance hack triggered widespread market unease. Funding rates show the downside was priced in more clearly for ether than for bitcoin.

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index is a composite gauge of sentiment in the crypto market, on a scale from 0 to 100, where low readings signal fear and high readings signal greed. The index had held steady in a neutral range of 48 to 54 points for a full week before falling from 51 to 30 on Friday, October 30 — a shift from “neutral” to “fear” in a single day. The drop coincided with the suspected hack of crypto exchange Binance and the subsequent sell-off in the market.

The calm held until Friday

The stability in the weeks before the hack makes the move stand out: an index that has stayed within a six-point range for seven days rarely jumps more than twenty points in a day without a clear trigger. Here, the shift coincided with bitcoin falling below $78,000 during October 29–30, in the wake of the suspected hack.

Bitcoin and ether are priced differently in derivatives

The clearest sign of where the fear settled is in funding rates for perpetual futures — the rates that keep derivatives prices in line with the spot market. For bitcoin, the funding rate stayed positive on Binance, Bybit and OKX throughout the drop, meaning long positions kept paying short positions. For ether, the picture flipped: the funding rate turned negative on all three exchanges, with short positions starting to pay long positions. In other words, the downside was priced in more clearly for ether than for bitcoin.

The index says more about positioning than about the hack

The fact that the fear index fell alongside the suspected Binance hack isn't the same as the number measuring the hack itself. The index is built on market behavior — volatility, trading volume, social media and, in this case, funding rates — so it moves in step with how investors are actually positioning themselves, not with the details of the event that triggered the move.

Optimism the day before fear took hold

Just hours before the index collapsed, Galaxy Digital's Alex Thorn praised bitcoin's resilience on an episode of the Unchained podcast on Thursday. The contrast shows how quickly sentiment in the crypto market can turn when a single event hits a market that had otherwise been calm.
