Eight ways to own crypto — which one are you?

Kaupr has mapped eight archetypes covering the full spectrum of crypto investors — from the Bitcoin purist with cold storage to the pension saver on a mainstream platform. Which one are you?

The crypto market is not one thing — and crypto investors are not one type of person. Behind the prices and portfolios lies a broad spectrum of motivations, risk tolerances and relationships to technology and the financial system. Kaupr has mapped eight archetypes that together cover most of the ways people actually own and engage with digital assets. Which one sounds most like you?

The sovereign Bitcoin maximalist

For this investor, crypto is about one thing: financial sovereignty. The goal is to eliminate all intermediaries and hold the underlying value directly — no funds, no ETFs, no counterparty risk. Everything sits in cold storage, physically controlled by the owner.

Distrust of central banks and the established financial system is not a footnote — it is the entire premise. ETFs and regulated products are not the solution; they are a new version of the problem. There are no compromises here.

Recognise yourself? You are probably among the most consistent voices in any crypto discussion room.

The culture trader and memecoin speculator

This archetype is not driven by long-term value storage, but by attention economics, internet culture and gamification. Dogecoin, Pepe, Solana memecoins — it is about asymmetric upside and being early on something that moves fast.

The base of operations is the browser wallet and decentralised exchanges. The risk of capital going to zero is fully accepted. The steady 7 percent annual return of an index fund is not an alternative — it is the boredom they are trying to escape.

This is the crypto market's most volatile archetype, and the one that attracts the most outside attention — for better and worse.

The altcoin optimist and protocol investor

Here, technology is the investment thesis itself. Exposure to smart contracts, decentralised protocols and infrastructure — Ethereum, Solana and similar networks — is not speculation; it is a judgement about which technology wins.

Passive holding is inefficient. This investor wants assets at work: staking, liquidity provision, yield. Being an active part of the infrastructure is not just a strategy — it is a position.

The financially curious everyday saver

The lowest possible barrier to entry, monthly contributions, no app-switching or technical anxiety. This archetype wants to own real crypto as a "spice" in their everyday finances — alongside their funds, not instead of them.

It is not ideology that drives this investor, but curiosity and a desire not to stand entirely outside something that keeps appearing in the news. Simplicity is not a compromise — it is the entire point.

The high-net-worth brokerage client

Large trades, regulated frameworks, no personal technical risk. This investor wants the asymmetric upside and deep liquidity of the crypto market — but wants to execute through the trading desk of their established broker, exactly as they trade everything else.

The infrastructure behind the scenes is invisible and irrelevant. What matters is that the trade happens in familiar, solid surroundings with full regulatory confidence.

The wealth advisory client

Personal guidance, deep analysis, tax certainty and tailored wealth management. This archetype does not want to make their own technical decisions — they want qualified advisers to manage the risk on their behalf, wrapped inside a comprehensive wealth mandate.

Crypto is one component in a broader portfolio, assessed and managed in the same way as any other asset. Trust in the adviser is a prerequisite. Everything else is noise.

The equity-driven pure play investor

Maximum exposure to Bitcoin's upside — but exclusively through ordinary, listed shares in a standard investment account. No personal wallets, no direct crypto ownership, no new platforms to learn.

Companies holding large Bitcoin reserves on their balance sheets act as a sponge: they absorb the price appreciation and return it as share price performance. For this investor, it is the only acceptable wrapper.

The convenience-driven ETP investor

Maximum simplicity, passive saving and automatic tax reporting on platforms they already use. For this archetype, crypto is just a ticker on a familiar screen — not a technology project, not an ideological movement.

ETPs on established savings platforms make it possible to gain exposure to the crypto market without leaving the framework of traditional saving. A pension perspective is not uncommon here.

This is the purest meeting point between crypto and traditional finance.
