AI and digitalisation dominate this year's payments conference

Finans Norge is once again hosting the Payments and Digitalisation Conference on 5-6 November at Quality Hotel Expo in Fornebu. AI as an agent, central banking and payments dominate the programme, with the US midterm election as backdrop.

Finans Norge is the Norwegian trade association for banking, finance and insurance, and the conference brings together actors working on the future of payment solutions, technology and digitalisation each year. Much has happened since last year's edition, and artificial intelligence has developed further – both as a practical tool and agent in everyday life, and as what some call a not-entirely-unlikely threat to humanity.

AI dominates this year's programme

What does seem highly likely, however, is that AI and its agents are already challenging traditional value chains through the choices AI makes on customers' behalf. Most of us rarely make a decision these days without first asking AI for advice. It is therefore no surprise that most talks at the conference will touch on AI, though from very different angles – as a tool, as an agent, and as a source of uncertainty for the industry.

Payments, central banking and digitalisation

Alongside AI, much of the programme covers the conference's classic themes: the role of central banks, the future of payments infrastructure, and the digitalisation of the financial industry. Where last year's conference centred on the question of what the world looked like after Trump 2.0, this year's framing is more open, with this week's US midterm election as the backdrop for an industry that has to keep moving forward regardless.

Kaupr is liveblogging from the conference

Kaupr is following the Payments and Digitalisation Conference both days and liveblogging from the event on kaupr.io, where the stories are gathered in a dedicated section on the front page.

Lahlum as the conference's wildcard

As a change of pace, historian and author Hans Olav Lahlum closes out the first day with an entertaining, fact-based account of democracy and the rule of law in the US – up to the result of this week's midterm election – along with some reflections on what comes next.
