Oslo Freedom Forum, which is taking place in Oslo the last week of May, is for the 9th year focusing on what they call freedom technologies, headed by Bitcoin, but also focusing on other open source technologies.
- Bitcoin is much more powerful as a freedom tool than 10-15 years ago, Alex Gladstein, the Chief Strategy Officer of Human Rights Foundation and Oslo Freedom Forum, says in a video interview with Kaupr.
Gladstein explains the usability of Bitcoin in general and for human rights activists like this:
-It's much more usable, much more liquid, it's easier to be private, it's easier to protect yourself, it's easier to hold bitcoin, it's easier to back it up. It's just becoming a lot more usable for the active activist than it was before. So it's a valuable tool in the human rights movement. And it's becoming an essential one, says Gladstein, who won't be surprised if by the end of the decade, every single human rights group is using bitcoin.
When Oslo Freedom Forum takes place from the 26th to the 28th of May, probably more than 100 prominent bitcoiners will probably be attending. Over the years, Oslo Freedom Forum has become a meeting place between activists and people from the bitcoin and tech communities, including CEOs, developers, investors, etc.
During the years Oslo Freedom Forum have become a meeting place between activists and people from the bitcoin and tech communities, including CEOs, developers, investors etc.
There will also be workshops and training sessions, if you are new to Bitcoin, or especially interested in how non-profit organizations and charities can use Bitcoin.
Financial freedom is a central topic also at this year's OFF, but now within a broader technological agenda called the Freedom Tech Track. Gladstein explains that in addition to Bitcoin, there will be sessions on other open source technologies that are good for activists, like encrypted chat communications, decentralized social media like Nostr, identification, ecash — which is programmable cash — and open source AI tools.
In the video interview, we have also asked Gladstein about the importance of Oslo Freedom Forum in a world that has become more fractionalized.
What we are doing is more important than ever before, because authoritarianism is on the rise. He also comments on the US government in relation to human rights, which is leaving a gap on the human rights stage.
We then ask him who can fill this gap (sorry about the bad sound on Morten).
This video is a part of a larger nterview we have done with Alex Gladstein, where we also go more in depth about his views about Bitcoin, including his motivation for the book he published in 2022, titled “Check Your Financial Privilege”. So keep track of news on kaupr.io or our YouTube channel, Kaupr Media, to be notified about the full interview.
