Nordea opens exchange traded bitcoin product in the Nordic region

Nordea has decided to give its customers the opportunity to trade a crypto-related product developed by CoinShares through the bank's channels. Nordea justifies the decision with the fact that the European regulations for cryptocurrency have matured.

The bank also points out that demand for virtual currencies and cryptocurrencies is increasing in the Nordic countries.

The new product is developed by CoinShares International and will be available at Nordea from December 2025.

Rapid growth in Europe

“The market for crypto products, particularly exchange-traded products (ETPs) with a cryptocurrency as an underlying asset, has grown rapidly in Europe in line with increased demand from both institutional and private investors looking to follow developments in digital assets on the existing financial market,” the bank writes.

Nordea has closely followed the trends in crypto, but has taken a cautious stance because it initially lacked regulations for crypto assets as well as investment protection and regulatory oversight.

Bitcoin as an underlying asset

The product that will soon become available to the bank's customers is a so-called synthetic ETP that allows investors to take part in the development of various asset classes via traditional financial instruments.
The ETP in question has Bitcoin as its underlying asset and targets experienced investors seeking alternative asset classes, it says.

Trading on the initiative of the client

“Trading takes place solely on the initiative of the customer through order intermediation, and Nordea does not provide any advice or recommendations on the product,” the bank writes.

Nordea stresses that it is always open to offering products and services that meet customer needs as the market matures.

Traditional banks have long been skeptical of cryptocurrency, as has the attitude of several financial authorities. In recent years, however, more and more banks have begun to turn around, with the backdrop of the risk of otherwise missing out on business opportunities.
