Parallel to the fact that the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority has granted the first MICA license to a Swedish company, FI goes out and encourages Swedish customers to relate to crypto exchanges that have either obtained a MICA license or that have applied for a license.
“Now companies need permission to be able to offer services related to crypto in Sweden. The Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority therefore urges consumers to ensure that they turn to crypto companies that have applied for or have already been granted permission,” FI said in a statement on FI's website.
Today it became known that Safello through its subsidiary Safello AB has received MICA license. The following other companies have submitted applications as a crypto service provider in Sweden and are now pending:
CtoC AB
The following companies have applied for and had their application rejected: QB Europe AB (part of the Valuno Group). The company has appealed the decision.
As of October 1, 2025, all crypto companies wishing to continue providing crypto services in Sweden must have submitted an application for permission to FI, or liquidate their business. Companies that have been registered with FI to provide crypto services are allowed to continue operations until the application is processed. Also, crypto companies that have been licensed in another EU country can offer crypto services in Sweden.
“With the MICA regulation, protection for you as a consumer is improved, but it is still weaker than for many other products on the financial market. It's important to understand the risks you're taking if you choose to buy crypto, says Charlotte Fried, Head of Payment Analytics and Policy at FI.
The EU's new crypto regulatory framework MICA regulation came into force in 2024 and implies that companies must have permission from FI, or another EU country, to issue certain types of crypto assets and provide services related to crypto. Services can be, for example, exchange services, the purchase of crypto, or wallet services for storing crypto.
