Bitcoin Payments Demo at Bitcoin 2025

Block, Inc. (NYSE: XYZ) announced its new bitcoin payments feature for Square with a live demonstration at the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas. Attendees can purchase merchandise at the BTC Inc. store using bitcoin, simply by scanning a QR code at checkout. The integration leverages the Lightning Network, enabling near-instant settlement and minimal fees, while Square’s system manages real-time exchange rates and payment confirmations automatically.

Economic Empowerment at the Core

“Rolling out a native bitcoin experience to millions of sellers brings us one step closer to bitcoin’s original vision. When a coffee shop or retail store can accept bitcoin through Square, small businesses get paid faster and keep more of their revenue. This is about economic empowerment for merchants who want payment options,” said Miles Suter, Bitcoin Product Lead at Block.

Phased Rollout to Millions of Merchants

Block will begin rolling out bitcoin payment capabilities to select Square sellers in the second half of 2025. Subject to regulatory approvals, the company plans to make the feature available to all eligible Square merchants by 2026, potentially enabling millions of businesses worldwide to accept bitcoin directly through their Square hardware.

Building on Bitcoin Conversions

This new offering builds on Square’s Bitcoin Conversions feature, launched in 2024, which allows qualified merchants to automatically convert a portion of their daily sales into bitcoin and deposit it into their linked Cash App accounts. Together, these features offer a seamless bitcoin payment and management experience for merchants.

Square’s New POS: Supporting the Integration

Earlier this year, Square introduced a new, unified Point of Sale (POS) platform now serving approximately four million merchant customers globally. The modern POS system—supporting diverse industries and integrating payments, inventory, loyalty, and customer data—provides the infrastructure that makes bitcoin payments possible, ensuring merchants can easily accept both traditional and digital payments.

Block’s Expanding Bitcoin Ecosystem

The new bitcoin payments feature is part of Block’s broader commitment to bitcoin, which also includes Cash App’s bitcoin services, the Bitkey self-custody wallet, Proto mining products, and Spiral’s open-source funding initiatives.
