According to a survey by K33 and the Nordic Blockchain Association, there are now 550,000 Norwegians who own crypto, while the figure for the entire Nordic region is 2.2 million. “This survey does not distinguish between different types of cryptocurrencies, but globally, the so-called Bitcoin dominance is growing, with Bitcoin accounting for two-thirds of the value of the entire crypto market. There is every reason to believe that even in Norway and the Nordic countries, Bitcoin has the largest place in people's crypto wallets,” Myrstad says.

Companies Bet on Bitcoin Purchases

What we are now also seeing is that companies and traditional investors are seriously starting to take an interest in Bitcoin,” Myrstad continues. In Kaupr, for example, we have surveyed three companies that all aim to own larger holdings of Bitcoin on their balance sheets, and all of which have an exchange strategy. The three companies are Swedish Bitcoin Treasury Capital, Swedish H100 and Norwegian Ace Digital. “They are all inspired by the tremendous performance of Michael Saylor and his company Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), which combines the purchase of Bitcoin with ongoing borrowing and continuous issues,” Myrstad says.

Bitcoin via ETP shares

Myrstad points out that the mutual fund Stack X Me and DNB Wealth Management also plan to launch crypto funds. In the Nordic countries, especially in Sweden, it has been particularly popular to acquire exposure to Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies by buying a stake in so-called ETP shares, which are comparable to the US ETP shares, and which in the Nordic countries are particularly offered by Virtuna, Coinshares and 21Shares.

Leading experts

With more than 500 now registered for the live event “State of Bitcoin in the Nordics”, Myrstad points out that Kaupr has succeeded in getting a number of experts in place for the live event. Among the speakers are representatives from Nordic crypto exchanges such as Torbjørn Bull Jenssen (K33), Emelie Moritz (Safello) and Christian Ander (Goobit/BCTX). All three Bitcoin-owning companies mentioned above are included, represented by Christoffer De Geer (Bitcoin Treasury Capital), Alexander Hagen (Ace Digital) and Sander Andersen (CEO of both Finpeers and H100). From the mutual fund side, Madeleine Bjørnestad Røed (Stack X Me), Aksel Øvern (Snøkam) will talk about a user case, Simon Ousager (Januar) will share insights on payments and Bitcoin Lightning, while Jakob Mikkel Hansen (Nordic Blockchain Association) and Håkon Sandbakken (Bitcoin Policy Institute) represent organized communities.

Large breadth of interested

According to Myrstad, the 500 enrollees have a broad background, but he has particularly noted the interest from the more traditional financial communities. “Here, both banks, investors and investment advisers are well represented, and not only from Norway. More than half of the enrollees are from other Nordic countries, the Baltic States, the United Kingdom and Northern Europe.

“Investors seem to be wondering how to position themselves in relation to Bitcoin, directly or indirectly, while investment advisers and facilitators are wondering how they can enter and establish themselves as providers in the market. The European framework MiCA, which is currently being adopted by the Norwegian Parliament, is likely to reinforce this trend further in the autumn,” Myrstad says.
